For this assignment in my Graphic Design I class, I chose to redo the packaging of Jones Soda, a quirky beverage company. I chose to redo their orange & cream flavor, but they've done everything from Bacon to Pineapple Upside Down Cake to Turkey and Gravy. My goal in redoing their packaging was to fix some of the problems I saw with it.
The first issue I noticed was that the handle was too low. When a customer picks up the container at the store, their first, when clenched around it, hits the bottles. I placed my hand grip above the bottles, and I made the opening larger.
Another problem I fixed was the amount of information included. Not only are relevant pieces of information such as nutrition facts omitted so Jones can display random quotes, many of the variations of the original packaging have neon colors, making it painful to look at long enough to read the text.
I considered removing the photos that Jones uses, but I decided against it for the sake of the emotional connection with the brand. To resolve this problem, I punched out windows in the carrier so the photographs on the bottles could be seen. This serves the same purpose that it did before, but it doesn’t make the photos explicitly part of the packaging, Since I removed the random quotes from the packaging, I included them in the form of cards that separate the bottles, making them into collectible pieces.
